The Bird's Nest Project

My passion for supporting women and children in domestic abuse situations started in college when I had the opportunity to volunteer through my sorority at the local domestic violence shelter which is why I started The Bird's Nest Project.

When I stepped into the shelter to volunteer I realized how unfamiliar everything must feel for a child going through these tough situations.

During one of the most stressful times of these children's lives, they lay their heads down each night in an unfamiliar bed. They are typically provided a bed or pack and play, pillow, blanket, toiletries, and toys - most of which have been donated by their community and are used repeatedly for each family that stays at the shelter.

Researchers have estimated that between 3.3 million and 10 million children are exposed to adult domestic abuse each year.

On average, it takes a mother seven attempted times to leave before staying away for good.

When these women and children leave they typically have the clothing on their backs and if they are lucky a few other personal possessions until they land on their feet.

Proceeds from The Bird's Nest Project are used to purchase pillows, pillowcases, and blankets for local shelters in hopes that each child coming into the shelter is given their very own set of bedding they can keep.
